Activities

The WI is not just about Jam and Jerusalem!  In fact, we have heard that some say that WI stands for ‘Wine Included’!

All our Island WIs are very different.  The WI is what you make it.   If you want to do some craft, or go to the theatre, go for a country walk or have afternoon tea, there’s nothing to stop you.  Our WIs do all these things and more.

Here are some of our recent activities.

Sub-groups

Within each WI, you will find several sub-groups tailored to what members require.  You may find a book group, lunch club, many different craft groups, a French conversation group, a walking group, gardening group and a theatre club. Bembridge Windmill and Creekside WIs have bought Kurling equipment - a game which mirrors curling on ice, but done in the comfort of your own location. WIs have been challenging each other to take part.

Fund-raising

WIs often raise money for local charities and make handsome donations.  Some have a monthly cake sale, others donate money from raffles, or from a bring-and-buy event.

Federation Activities

As well as doing things in our individual WIs, we often join together and take part in activities across the IOW Federation.

We run the tea tent at the IOW County Show

We come together for our Annual Meeting once a year at Northwood House.  The year our star Speaker was Mike Christie from the group G4.  We loved him so much that lots of us went to see him in the G4 show at Newport Minster in November.

Arts & Leisure Group

The newly reformed Arts and Leisure group have organised activities such as a private visit to Morton Manor Gardens just for WI members.

They also arranged a walk along Ryde Esplanade, hired a beach hut for the afternoon and  had a private viewing of the newly opened Appley Tower.

They arranged a theatre trip to see ‘Sheila’s Island’ at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, attended by 47 WI ladies.

They held a Bake Off competition with another happening shortly.

There is a thriving Photography Group who arrange photowalks and photo scavenger hunts.
